Eurex to list cleared Japanese single-stock and dividend futures from 2 November
The products, Eurex's first on Asian underlyings, start with ten Nikkei 225 names and trade 21 hours a day. They are aimed at bilateral equity-swap financing in yen and dollars.
Eurex will launch single-stock futures (SSFs) and single-stock dividend futures (SSDFs) on Japanese equities on 2 November. The Deutsche Börse derivatives exchange says this is its first move into equity derivatives on Asia-Pacific underlyings.
In its 6 October announcement, Eurex described Japan as “the last major developed market not yet covered by Eurex’s equity financing product suite”. It also said it is the first market infrastructure to offer centrally cleared, exchange-executed futures on individual Japanese stocks.
Product details
- Launch universe: ten leading Nikkei 225 names, chosen with clients and partners. Further phases through 2027 will extend coverage to the majority of index constituents.
- Currencies: SSDFs trade in yen. SSFs trade in both yen and US dollars.
- Hours: 21 hours a day, from 08:15 Singapore time (09:15 in Tokyo).
- Clearing: trades are executed on Eurex’s regulated market and cleared through Eurex Clearing, with no ISDA master agreement required.
The two contracts can be traded as a pair to replicate total-return strategies, or separately.
The target market
Eurex is aiming at bilateral swap financing. It describes Japan as one of Asia’s largest equity financing markets, with “substantial bilateral OTC swap activity across both onshore JPY and offshore USD transactions”. Together, it says, the two futures “replicate the full economic return of an equity financing transaction”, without the bilateral counterparty risk or the capital, margin and compliance costs of uncleared OTC trades.
The approach follows what Eurex has already done in Europe, where it moved OTC structures into listed, cleared form through:
- total return futures, including equity-based TRFs on European underlyings
- MSCI derivatives
- credit and FX futures
“For the first time, we are extending our proven infrastructure for equity derivatives to Asian underlying assets,” said Matthias Graulich, head of global products and markets. He said the launch gives participants “a single, deep liquidity pool as well as the capital efficiency of central clearing”.
Why it matters
Japanese single-stock delta-one financing has mostly been done through bilateral swaps between prime brokers and hedge funds. As uncleared margin rules and leverage ratio costs have risen, the business has become more expensive to run.
A listed future on the same economics lets dealers move exposure into a cleared netting set. Buy-side firms that already trade Eurex TRFs can use their existing clearing setup.
Practical questions remain:
- Liquidity: whether market makers will quote competitively during Tokyo hours.
- Pricing: how dividend-future pricing compares with local implied dividend markets.
- Scope: whether ten names is enough to attract portfolio-level flow.
Japanese exchanges have not, as far as the announcement indicates, offered a cleared equivalent. Eurex’s 21-hour window suggests it wants Asian, European and US flow in the same order book.
